About "This Road"

We often get caught up in the past or obsess over what might come in the future that we forget to embrace, seize, and live in the present. With an optimistic, reassuring story and uplifting, driving production that's perfect for that summer road trip, "This Road" eases any hesitance or uncertainty you may have about living in the now, assuring that it will all be equally met with contentment, gratification, and no regrets.

Inspiration behind "This Road"

I wrote this song in March 2013, when I was just starting at Seneca College in a program for music. Prior to that, I was at University of Toronto doing a double major in health sciences, which ended up not working out. I wrote this song during a time when I was slightly nervous about what was to come of my choices, but in the moment, I was super happy and satisfied with studying my passion.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Do you ever feel like you could see for miles
Living life on the road, a movie-like journey
Always searching for that picture perfect landscape
But your mind always seems to disagree

[Pre-Chorus]
But don't give up halfway
When all falls through, I'm here to stay
And I'd say

[Chorus]
You don't have to know where you're going
Don't worry if it doesn't feel right
Just take my hand, we can walk on this road again, yeah
Through twists and turns, and when it's all a blur
I'm here when things seem black and white
Just take my hand, we can walk on this road again
Yeah, yeah

[Verse 2]
For a minute you look back and wonder why
But with every new turn comes a new perspective
Always searching for that picture perfect moment
But life always seems to throw another skid
But I’d say

[Chorus 2]
You don't have to know where you're going
Don't worry if it doesn't feel right
Just take my hand, we can walk on this road again, yeah
Through twists and turns, and when it's all a blur
I'm here when things seem black and white
Just take my hand, we can walk on this road again
Yeah, yeah, ooo, yeah

This road, I’m walking down this road again, yeah

[Bridge]
You gotta keep moving, you gotta keep moving
No time to get engaged with doubt
You gotta keep moving, you gotta keep moving
We'll try and figure it all out, yeah
But I’d say

[Chorus 3]
You don't have to know where you're going
Don't worry if it doesn't feel right
Just take my hand, we can walk on this road again
But I’d say

[Chorus 4]
You don't have to know where you're going
Don't worry if it doesn't feel right
Just take my hand, we can walk on this road again, yeah
Through twists and turns, and when it's all a blur
I'm here when things seem black and white
Just take my hand, we can walk on this road again
Yeah, yeah

About "Lovesick"

Have you ever been in love with or missing someone so much that it actually makes you not function normally? "Lovesick" takes that idea and adds a bit of jealousy and envy into the mix. This person is like a drug to you and you can't let them go. All you can do is give them the opportunity to pursue or deny you, but until then, you'll stay lovesick.

Inspiration behind "Lovesick"

I honestly don't remember if I wrote this about someone I was obsessing over at the time, or if someone told me a story about them obsessing over someone. It may or may not be the former. Regardless, the idea was something I wanted to explore, while also desiring to try something fresh and different with my sound. The result was a late 90s inspired R&B track about love.

Lyrics

[Intro]
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Woah, ooo… yeah

[Verse 1]
I’m outta control now
Can’t tame these feelings
When you’re around
My breath is all you’re stealing

I can’t stop thinking
Can’t get you off my mind
Got my heart now singing
Hold your body close to mine

[Chorus 1]
Take it or leave it (take it or leave it)
Leave your doubts behind (behind)
So caught up in debating (up in debating)
Have pity on this heart of mine, yeah
Take it or leave it (take it or leave it)
Or better luck next time? (next time)
I think I'm getting lovesick (lovesick)
Someone like you is hard to find

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

[Verse 2]
My heart starts sinking
When you're with him
Got my feelings twisted
Don't wanna be a could have been, yeah

You're my addiction
And I can't give you up, not now
It is you I need and
Will we ever work this out?
Yeah

[Chorus 2]
Take it or leave it (take it or leave it)
Leave your doubts behind (behind)
So caught up in debating (up in debating)
Have pity on this heart of mine, yeah
Take it or leave it (take it or leave it)
Or better luck next time? (next time)
I think I'm getting lovesick (lovesick)
Someone like you is hard to find

[Post-Chorus 3]
Woah, oh, oh, yeah
Ooo…, yeah
Lovesick, and I’m lovesick and
I’m lovesick, and I’m lovesick, and
I’m lovesick, and I’m lovesick, and
I’m lovesick, love lovesick, yeah

[Chorus 3]
Take it or leave it
Leave your doubts behind
So caught up in debating
Have pity on this heart of mine, yeah
Take it or leave it (take it or leave it)
Or better luck next time? (next time)
I think I'm getting lovesick (lovesick)
Someone like you is hard to find
Someone like you is hard to find
Someone like you is hard to find

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah
Ooo… oh oh, oh, oh
Lovesick, and I’m lovesick and
I’m lovesick, and I’m lovesick, and
I’m lovesick, and I’m lovesick, and
I’m lovesick, love lovesick, yeah

About "Eyes On You"

It's your freshman year at university. You make eye contact with someone that you eventually become friends with. Over time, you both develop this burning love for each other, but neither of you profess that love fearing that it would ruin your relationship, even though you both feel the same way about each other. "Eyes On You" is about that struggle you have with telling someone how you really feel about them. Until you build up the courage to ask, you obsess internally over how things would be if they knew.

Inspiration behind "Eyes On You"

This song is directly inspired by a true story told to me by a friend and how they met their current partner. The story of how they met and how they ultimately got into their relationship was told in one of the many vlogs I have on my YouTube channel. I remember coming home after a night out with both of them and being super inspired to write about it for some reason. I never told them that I wrote a song inspired by their story. Fun fact: The original title of this song was "If Only You Knew Part 3".

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Never showed love when you were around
But you got me high above the ground
Tried to not let this get in the way
Even though I wanted you to stay

Years gone by without a word
Would this change what we are from what we were
I know what I want deep down inside
Yet all I do is run and hide, but

[Chorus 1]
Once I laid eyes on you
Oh I knew
I wouldn’t be the same without you
If I could just show how I feel
If only you knew
What I’m going through
If only you knew
That I love you

[Verse 2]
It’s harder each day to be with you
And I don’t know what to really do
Can we let our minds just run away
To a place where I can finally say, yeah

[Chorus 2]
Once I laid eyes on you
Oh I knew
I wouldn’t be the same without you
If I could just show how I feel
If only you knew
What I’m going through
If only you knew
That I love you

[Bridge]
I tried to get over you
But I only loved you more
There’s no turning back from now
‘Cause you’re the one I’m looking for

[Chorus 3]
Once I laid eyes on you
Oh I knew, hmm…
Oh

[Chorus 4]
Once I laid eyes on you (eyes on you)
Oh I knew
I wouldn’t be the same without you
If I could just show how I feel (how I feel)
If only you knew
What I’m going through
If only you knew
That I love you
Hmm…

About "Alone"

People say that time can heal emotional pain. But if you solely rely on the passing of time to heal whatever you're dealing with, you won't ever truly reach a stage of peace. "Alone" is about reflecting on a relationship that hit a rough patch, and you blame yourself for everything that happened. You isolate yourself and your thoughts, and you feel like you have no one to reach out to. Your mind is a battlefield, at war with its own thoughts. You fight back tears and hope things just get better.

Inspiration behind "Alone"

At the time this song was written (April 2016), I was going through a rough time with a personal relationship. It's complicated, but then again, it's not. I attribute the current state of our relationship a result of growing up, and wanting to spend time alone and apart. I tried to rekindle some sort of contact, but a cold shoulder was turned. I've learned to accept the fact that they just want to focus on themselves and have their space, and I've at least found some peace with that realization.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I find it hard when you're around
To say what's on my mind
I'm sorry if I let you down
It's the words I can't seem to find

So I keep myself afar
Even though I want you close
Can we change the way things are
Can you forgive this bitter soul
'Cause I'm feeling so alone

[Chorus 1]
But I won't give up
I won't just walk away
And there's nothing I won't do to bring you back
I won't let time heal all this pain
Thinking I might lose control
'Cause I'm feeling so alone

[Verse 2]
Everyday I try to hide
This heavy feeling in my heart
I know I won't be satisfied
If we let this drift apart
And you make this seem so hard?

[Chorus 2]
But I won't give up
I won't just walk away
And there's nothing I won't do to bring you back
I won't let time heal all this pain
Thinking I might lose control
'Cause I'm feeling so alone
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Ooo, yeah, yeah

[Outro]
Can you forgive this bitter soul
Thinking I might lose control, yeah
'Cause I'm feeling so alone

About "If Only You Knew (Acoustic)"

"If Only You Knew" reflects on a time when you developed your first crush. You get butterflies, your heart races, you obsess over them whenver they're around. But for some reason, you can't seem to just tell this person you are in love with them, so in the meantime, you fantasize over the idea and how things would be if they really knew how you felt.

Inspiration behind "If Only You Knew (Acoustic)"

This song was originally written in July 2011 as I was reflecting on a high school crush that I had. I was so obsessed over this person, but instead of telling them how I felt, I channeled all that energy into writing a song about them, and how they made me feel when they were around. This song is hands down my favourite original song that I've written. It's the song that kickstarted my career in music.

Lyrics

[Intro]
Ahh…oh yeah
Ooo…

[Verse 1]
It all began, when we first met
You caught my eye, by surprise
And I couldn't help, but smile every time you walked by
And even though we just met, inside I get butterflies

[Chorus 1]
If only you knew I was in love with you
If only you knew I was the one
That was crushin' so much on you
We can run away together
Make it through all kinds of weather
If only you knew I was in love
With you, with you
Yeah you

[Hook]
In love, in love, in love, in love
In love, in love, in love, in love

[Verse 2]
My heart beats faster, every time I see your face
Just hearing your voice, it makes my day
Ooo…

[Chorus 2]
If only you knew I was in love with you
If only you knew I am the one
That would do everything for you
We can watch the stars together
Make promises to last forever
If only you knew I was in love
With you, with you
Yeah you

[Hook]
In love, in love, in love, in love
Yeah you
In love, in love, in love, in love

[Chorus 3]
If only you knew I was in love, with you
If only you knew I was in love
If only you knew

[Chorus 4]
Knew I was in love with you
If only you knew I was the one
That was crushin' so much on you
We can run away together
Make it through all kinds of weather
If only you knew I was in love
With you, with you
We can watch the stars together (watch the stars)
Make promises to last forever (if only you knew)
If only you knew I was in love (in love, in love)
With you, with you (in love, in love)
With you, with you (in love, in love)
With you, with you (in love, in love)
Yeah you, yeah you, hmm… yeah

[Hook]
In love, in love, in love, in love
In love, in love, in love, in love

About "Better This Way"

Have you ever come to the realization that you actually might be better off without someone? "Better This Way" specifically reflects on the moment you realize that the person or people you thought you could confide in and love actually don't reciprocate that same sentiment. You're then left to deeply contemplate if you're better off pursuing life separately, while constantly going back and forth with how you feel, and ultimately letting go and moving on.

Inspiration behind "Better This Way"

I've had my fair share of rocky friendships and relationships. Often, we move past our disagreements and differences and become even closer. Other times, I've come to the realization that it's probably better for me to cut things off completely. Sure, it wasn't easy at first, but I ultimately felt better and happier when I let go. Things have surely been better this way.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
It's hard for me to move on
I can't stop thinking
Am I better now that you're gone
Or am I lying

[Pre-Chorus 1]
To myself
'Cause no one else
Made me

[Chorus 1]
Feel like you do
You walked into my life
Stayed a while then said goodbye
Every night I wonder
When you had nothing to say
That you realized that things
Are better this way

[Verse 2]
A thousand words but none (A thousand words but none)
Can explain this feeling (I can’t, no I can’t)
Maybe you weren't the one (No you weren’t the one)
And now I'm left here dealing (Ahhh)

[Pre-Chorus 2]
With this heartache
'Cause no one else
Made me

[Chorus 2]
Feel like you do
You walked into my life
Stayed a while then said goodbye
Every night I wonder
When you had nothing to say
That you realized that things
Are better this way

[Bridge]
I miss how we used to be
Is there a chance that we'll go back
And letting go isn't easy
'Cause no one else, no one else
Made me

[Chorus 3]
Feel like you do
You walked into my life
Stayed a while then said goodbye
Every night I wonder
When you had nothing to say
That you realized that things
Are better this way, yeah

About "A Little Lonely"

Sometimes the happiest person in the room is also the loneliest. "A Little Lonely" dives deep into the mind of that lonely person. The person who always asks how people are but never gets asked themselves. The person who gets caught up in making other people smile while they suffer inside. The person that's constantly fighting an internal battle yet somehow gets by. Often times, the thing these people need are a listening ear, a comforting shoulder, and understanding company.

Inspiration behind "A Little Lonely"

I wrote this song in December 2012. I was feeling lonely in a sense that I felt like no one understood what was going on in my head at the time. I had just dropped out of my program at University of Toronto, and I really felt like I was going through a crisis by myself. It was the holiday season, a time that's supposed to be jolly and exciting, and I certainly was on the outside. But under all of that, I was actually sad, lonely, and worried about what I wanted to do with my life.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Ever wonder how I'm doing
Care to ask "how's my day?"
Busy making people smile
While the pain just eats away

Ever wonder if you know
What's really going on inside
Didn't think I'd ever tell
Maybe this is worth a try

[Chorus 1]
Sometimes I get a little lonely
Sometimes it kinda hurts
Alone I try to understand
Should I play it for all it's worth

Sometimes I get a little lonely
Though it seems I'm doing fine
Alone I bear the pain and hurt
But somehow I'm getting by

I'm getting by
But somehow I'm getting by

[Verse 2]
Ever bothered to ask
But you're so caught up in life
Always fighting with myself
For reasons I can never find

[Chorus 2]
Sometimes I get a little lonely
Sometimes it kinda hurts
Alone I try to understand
Should I play it for all it's worth

Sometimes I get a little lonely
Though it seems I'm doing fine
Alone I bear the pain and hurt
But somehow I'm getting by

I'm getting by
But somehow I'm getting by

[Verse 3]
Would you notice if I'm gone
Would you ever wonder why
Would you take a second thought
Or would you let it all go by

[Chorus 3]
Sometimes I get a little lonely
Sometimes it kinda hurts
Alone I try to understand
Should I play it for all it's worth

Sometimes I get a little lonely
Though it seems I'm doing fine
Alone I bear the pain and hurt
But somehow I'm getting
Somehow I'm getting
Somehow I'm getting by

About "Back To You"

A friendship is a platonic relationship between two people who care about each other. You might sometimes wonder where you would be now if it weren't for your friends. "Back To You" explores a friendship that budded simply because of a mutual passion, and over time you've become really close. You've shared life talks, heart-to-hearts, and encouraging conversations. You're thankful you have them, and you don't know how you'll ever owe them back for always being by your side.

Inspiration behind "Back To You"

I was inspired to write this song by a real life friendship that I developed back when I was in college. It took some time for us to get acquainted, but we both uncovered common interests like acoustic guitars and heartfelt songwriting. We had many recording sessions together, which helped both of us develop into the people and artists we are today. I'll always be thankful for those times and for the great music that we created. This song is about being thankful for those who were there for you in times of need.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I remember the first time that we met
We were too shy to exchange words
And it's funny to see where we stand now
'Cause we have something we both thought would never occur

[Chorus 1]
Every time I think of my life now
Every time it seems no one's around
You're there to steer my heart away from pain
Every time I think I'm feeling low
You're the only one who always knows
Just what to say to get me through the day
And I'll never find a way
To owe it all back to you

[Verse 2]
Thanks to you I have someone to turn to
Someone to listen to all I have to say
You may not even realize how much you've done for me
And I pray that you'll be the one to stay

[Chorus 2]
Every time I think of my life now
Every time it seems no one's around
You're there to steer my heart away from pain
Every time I think I'm feeling low
You're the only one who always knows
Just what to say to get me through the day
And I'll never find a way
To owe it all back to you

[Bridge]
I know I can't solve all your fears
I know I can't change your painful past
I know I can't tell you what's to come
I'll be there when you need me

[Chorus 3]
Every time I think of my life now
Every time it seems no one's around
You're there to steer my heart away from pain
Every time I think I'm feeling low
You're the only one who always knows
Just what to say to get me through the day, yeah

[Chorus 4]
Every time I think of my life now
Every time it seems no one's around
You're there to steer my heart away from pain
Every time I think I'm feeling low
You're the only one who always knows
Just what to say to get me through the day
And I'll never find a way
To owe it all back to you

About "Work With Me (feat. Denice Badua)"

When things are going really well for you, there will always be that small percentage of people that try to tear you down. This can be fuelled by jealousy, hate, or nothing at all. One negative comment can ruin everything for you no matter how much positivity you surround yourself with. "Work With Me" describes how you might end up wondering aimlessly in life because that 2 percent of people threw you completely off your path. But you come to realize that what's important is to embrace who you are, and to follow your heart.

Inspiration behind "Work With Me (feat. Denice Badua)"

This song was inspired by story told by a YouTube personality in one of their podcast episodes. At the time, they were a budding YouTuber, and people were questioning and hating on them for a very small mistake they made in one of their videos. They ended up feeling angry and upset, and started questioning themselves and their ability to do what they were doing. Their story resonated with me so much that I ended up writing "Work With Me", a song based on their experience.

Lyrics

[Verse 1: Ryan]
I'm feeling bad and I don't know why
I'm driving 'round really late at night
I'm doing my best, but I still obsess
Over two percent of them

Wondering down the aisles upset
Trying so hard to disconnect
I'm doing my best, but I’m sensitive
Getting underneath my skin

[Chorus 1: Ryan]
Why do I let things get to me
My mind and heart just don't agree
I'm fighting with myself and with my feelings
Missing how I used to be
But I'm learning to work with me

[Verse 2: Denice]
I overthink and I don't know why
Sometimes I wonder how I got by
I'm doing my best, is this just a test
Can't seem to fall asleep tonight

I'm just scared this will fall apart
Didn't think it could get this hard
I'm doing my best, don't wanna forget
I'm just following my heart

[Chorus 2: Ryan + Denice]
Why do I let things get to me
My mind and heart just don't agree
I'm fighting with myself and with my feelings
Missing how I used to be
But I'm learning to work with me

[Chorus 3: Ryan]
Why do I let things get to me
My mind and heart just don't agree
I'm fighting with myself and with my feelings
Missing how I used to be
But I'm learning to work with me
But I'm learning to work with me

About "See The Stars"

Do you ever get giddy whenever you're around someone that you may have a crush on? Building on the overall theme of "If Only You Knew", "See The Stars" further explores that infatuation you may have with someone, but you convince yourself of the fact that they would never feel the same way toward you as you feel toward them. You act all cool, maybe a little flirty, around them but when they're not around, you constantly battle whether or not you should tell them how you really feel.

Inspiration behind "See The Stars"

This song was inspired by a text conversation I had with one of my good friends who developed a crush for someone that we both knew. She would constantly text me about this guy and how he would make her feel just with his presence. I remember how this song came together so clearly because I put off replying to her messages for some time because I was inspired to write a song about this whole situation.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I’m lying in bed thinking about you
Do you think we could be more than just friends
You’ve been in my dreams and on my mind
Do I spill my heart out or hide instead

[Pre-Chorus 1]
I’ve just been lonely
And I’m longing, to

[Chorus 1]
Drive away to a place
Where we can see the stars
I lie awake ‘cause I can’t take
Being apart
And I don’t know why when we say goodbye
I break up inside can we just find time to
Drive away to a place
Where we can see the stars, yeah
(I can see the)

[Verse 2]
Every time you’re around I wonder why
There’s so many words I’ve left unsaid
If there’s no one around, just you and I
Do I make the first move or wait instead, oh

[Pre-Chorus 2]
I’ve just been lonely
And I’m longing, to

[Chorus 2]
Drive away to a place
Where we can see the stars
I lie awake ‘cause I can’t take
Being apart
And I don’t know why when we say goodbye
I break up inside can we just find time to
Drive away to a place
Where we can see the stars, yeah, oh
(I can, I can see the stars)
